Would some global shim help the transition to Qt5 and PySide2 for module developers?

Hello. No problem.
Building PySide2 against Qt > 5.6.2 is not supported at the moment. I'm using self-built 5.6.2 on debian unstable. This should work without problems for you.

Ah that explains it all :) Thanks!
I'll wait a little bit to see if that changes, otherwise I'll compile an earlier version here.
