Wiki file extension attachment permission for fcstd

Post by jmaustpc »

Hi all
Are we able to edit the allowed for attachment file extensions permissions for the wiki so that we can "allow" fcstd? I would like to be able to add demo files for some of the wiki pages.

Or does only Sourceforge have access to that?

We have not much access to the hosted-app-wiki. But I'm not quit sure adding .fcstd is a good idea, since they can become really big...
I would rather use maybe our abendoned SVN system to manage example data..

OK, that's what I thought, so this is an academic discussion ...until we host our own application. :)

Generally I agree and I can see the potential problem if we allow all the people with wiki edit rights to add fcstd files, we could end up with GBs of data. For a parts library, and most examples the SVN or similar is a good idea.

However what I wanted to do was something very specific. We have step by step instructions for some examples of some tools. For example this page in German
https://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/ ... rt_Loft/de
The author has step by step instructions. If we could add the fcstd file or a link to where it can be easily downloaded it would be very useful for the new user but also for translators who want to copy the wiki page in their native language. The translator could open this file in their FreeCAD and redo the screen shots which would then show up in their language. It could aid consistence in the wiki between languages.

By the way, this is the English version of the same page which I have created and I am still working on.
https://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/ ... rt_Loft/de

One solution perhaps could be to only allow a few specific users the rights to add fcstd files so it can be done in only a very limited manner? Another solution could be to link to some download system that allows a user to download a fcstd file directly from their web browser, from within the wiki.

On another point I just worked out how to create edit wiki pages and upload files. I used a very uncommon method to work out how to do so....I read the Help files! :)

One question I have not yet worked out is how do I delete a page? Specifically I created the "file" page for the Assembly icon but mistakenly created the page for and uploaded the SVG file rather than the PNG file. I have created a new "file" page for the PNG and uploaded the correct file, but I can't see how to delete the svg one.

This is the incorrect page which I want to delete
https://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/ ... sembly.svg

This is the correct page that I want to keep, the same URL as above but ending in PNG
https://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/ ... sembly.png

As another matter of interest, the svg file did not render properly from within the wiki, in Firefox on Kubuntu 12.04.1. See here for what it looked like. It dropped the red lines and the largest blue box.

Anyway this post is no doubt getting to long so I best be off. :)

I should mention that I also opened the SVG file from my HDD, directly in Firefox and it rendered perfectly, so this is a wiki or Firefox wiki issue, not a Firefox SVG issue.

We can address this problem when we finally moved the wiki. Then we have more control!

Hi,

There is working ongoing for supporting 3D files in Wikimedia Commons (the wikipedia's file repository)

This could be great using as described here viewtopic.php?f=8&t=17919&p=142383 for example.

If FreeCAD communty is interested in Wikicommoms supports FCStd format could be good to open a sub-thread in main conversation https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T3790,

there are some sub-threads open for other 3D file formats:
- STL : https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T143201
- PLY : https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T145499
- OBJ : https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T145502

This is still a good idea. Might make this a ticket and tag as #lowhangingfruit

Kunda1, do you mean that FCstd support is a good idea in FreeCAD wiki or in Wikipedia? I think that FCstd support in Wikipedia could be great:

Imagine a wikipedia article (or its corresponding wikidata item) about an object linked to its FCstd file, for example an Arduino Mega https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q25859692 linked to their 3D file https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD-libr ... mega.fcstd. This could empower both communities too (FreeCAD and Wikipedia).

Question is that I don't know who can I address this in FreeCAD community (original post forum at https://forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic. ... 49#p157249 , other posts here https://forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic. ... 88#p142388 and https://forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic. ... 83#p142383) or even how to give more visibility to it in order to start a conversation about challenges/use/possible problems, etc..

greetings
