Are you looking for help regarding FreeCAD FEM Workbench?

Postby bernd » Mon Aug 24, 2015 6:01 am

Welcome here, and thanks for your interest in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) features of FreeCAD's FEM Workbench!

If you have Problems in setting up a working FreeCAD FEM Workbench or in creating a simple FEA check out FreeCAD's FEM example file FEM_CalculiX_Cantilever_3D first. Further installation instructions could be found at FEM Install.

If you would like to ask for any help in the regard of FEM Workbench please provide your FreeCAD info. Just open FreeCAD go to Help --> about and press the button copy to clipboard. Find a detailed description here

Have a lot of fun with FreeCAD

Bernd

Hi bernd
I am happy to except that this forum is supposed to be for development, not help. I don't think we would want to encourage people to fill the development forum with normal Help requests ...although often there is not a clear difference...but I think we should be expecting people to try and keep Help to the Help forums.

Should we have specific topic help forums? That is another question. Many already seem to get confused where to post already, so we have in the past just told people to put a sensible topic description ...but if others want a special help forum topic for something a bit specialised like FEM, I would not object. :)

Yorik, Norm, Werner, Juergen i.e. an admin, has to create new forums, a moderator does not have the permissions.

I think it's a good idea to make a topic forum (sub forum if "Help on using FreeCAD"?). The FEM wb is still under active development, but it's usable out-of-the-box (*), so we're getting more users asking for information how to use it.

(*) when FreeCAD is compiled with netgen or with external use of gmsh

I am new to FreeCAD and this Forum, hope this post is in the correct area.

I am having trouble running FEM. Here is my configuration:
OS: Windows 10
Word size of OS: 64-bit
Word size of FreeCAD: 64-bit
Version: 0.16.6704 (Git)
Build type: Release
Branch: releases/FreeCAD-0-16
Hash: 0c449d7e8f9b2b1fb93e3f8d1865e2f59d7ed253
Python version: 2.7.8
Qt version: 4.8.7
Coin version: 4.0.0a
OCC version: 6.8.0.oce-0.17

I can load the cantilever FEM example and view resuts. However, the Solve button remains greyed. I can access the Mechanical Analysis via "Start solver job" and write the .inp file. However, when I run Calculix it just keeps running without producing a result (I have let it run for more than a minute). Would a previous version of FreeCAD possibly solve my issues? I only want to do a basic static analysis.

Thanks
Anton

Solved by setting (in preferences, FEM) ccx binary to: C:/Program Files/FreeCAD 0.16/bin/ccx.exe (after installation the default value here is some unrelated windows file?)

Hi,

Im looking to create a parametrized study using the FEM module. My first and only idea to do this is to use the Macro editor and create a script somehow. A number of questions arose because it sounded simpler than it was:

1. How to activate the Analysis?
2. How to find the methods to start the simulation?
3. How to keep and store the results, then how to show the results?

I just started using the FEM Module and the python script but somewhat it confuses me and I am stuck how to find methods for the GUI objects, by using dir, but it only gives the "common view-object methods" as I see it.

Although this could be a more "python" aimed topic, it has still somewhat with fundamental FEM studies that professional uses for design evaluations.

Best Regards,
Markus

I'd suggest to start a new topic and take a look at the test for FEM wb [1]. It does full analysis except instead running CalculiX makes a mock calculations.
