Want to update the install page, any sugestion

Post by Mika38 »

Dear All FreeCAD enthusiast,

I had some problem to install the last stable and daily build version of FreeCAD. https://forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=20675. And I would to avoid any other user to be in the same failing situation as I was. Improving the wiki seems to be next good step in my plan to be be a contributor to FreeCAD. And what could be a better place to start, to the place where the documentation fail to solve my problem?

I would like to refresh the install page of the wiki for the Linux install first. https://www.freecadweb.org/wiki/Install_on_Unix, by slitting the page in two one for the stable version, and an other one for the daily-build one. Also, update the https://www.freecadweb.org/wiki/Download to take in count the modification. If every thing goes well I will probably do a major update in the download page, because lot of information are too advance for first time user, and other information are redundant. To achieved this aim, I will do it step by step. one step at the time.

It's the first time I modify the wiki, so, I'm not going to rush into the install page, and probably make big mistake. First, I already read the two first posts of the wiki part of this forum. Then, I decided to create this post, it seems a good place to start. Furthermore, I'm going to study the source code of the example page; Try to do some minor improvement on a not important page, and, I'm going to try to do a major upgrade on an annexe function. Then, there I'm going to try make this (GNU/)linux install page beautiful.

In parallel, I will document my experience as a beginner contributor on this post. This way, I will point out what is easy or difficult, thus, we should be simplify the life of the future beginner contributor. And maybe, fixing the work-flow of the beginner contributor will be my next objective. ;)

Any advices so far? I'm do it right?

Mika

I think the Install on Unix page could benefit from a separation into "Stable" and "Dev" sections, and the "Download" page could definitely use some reorganization, as well. If you happen to want a 2nd pair of eyes on any edits you make, feel free to post in this topic again.

For Dev version, I'd suggest including the links to the scripts proposed on this page :
