Alibre Bracket

Post by NormandC »

OK, since it's my idea, it's my duty to break the ice. :)

kwahoo/salceson2's video on YouTube, where he models a shape he found on an AutoCAD video tutorial, gave me this idea.

I found this nice video on Alibre.com (Alibre is a commercial parametric modeling app for Windows geared toward hobbyists as well as professionals) explaining what parametric modeling is.

I reproduced the bracket that is modeled, and of course converting the inches units to mm. I used mostly the Sketcher and Part Design workbenches, but had to go to the Part workbench to make a boolean cut for the slot, since the sketch was made on a plane not connected to a face.

File exceeds 256KB, I'll try to find a sharing service. Hey I've got a 5GB free Ubuntu One account with nothing in it (if you've got a Launchpad account, you already have a Ubuntu One account!), so here we go: alibre_bracket.fcstd

FreeCAD v0.12 bzr4427 from Daily Builds PPA on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64-Bit.

Very nice!
I think we will have the boolean operations in PartDesign as well. In my company
they are quit often used (to model milling steps)..

Yes, its always more fun to implement features. But I realized we start only really tackling bugs
if a release is on the way! :) Its a kind of self trickery ;)

There is new splashscreen on start page when you start FreeCAD. You can use that one. It seems good to me

Very true... There is some truth in the "release soon, release often" motto...

Yes, but it's old already! We need a bleeding-edge new one! :)

Hey! Stop hijacking my thread!

I agree about a v0.12 release. There's a lot of new stuff: Start Page, Arch, and Sketcher / Part Design. :)

BTW can the Start Page be translated? I've meant to log in to Crowdin, haven't in a while.

So far not, but thats doable.

At the moment the content is defined in a script. But maybe we can scrape out the literal stuff in a html file
again which is dependend to the language. e.g. StartPage_de.html and so on .....

Yorik, what do you think?
Btw, your StartPage is really gorgeous!
