Using Path workbench to pocket slots

Post by ericg47calle »

Hi,
I hope this is the correct spot to ask specifically about the Path Module.

I want to pocket (not profile) a slot that goes completely through the material, but I cannot seem to acheive it.
I can pocket a slot that does not go through the material, I can profile a slot that does go through the material, but cannot work out how to do the pocket I want.

Eric,

I took a quick look at your file. I do not see anything wrong.

The pocket operation at this time requires a flat face at the the bottom of the pocket. A circular face or a ring of faces along the sidewall of the hole does not work at this time. Improvements in the pocket operation have been discussed in the Path forum, and I expect more capability in the near future. (The Path forum is probably a better place to discuss this topic.)

In the interim, a trick I use all the time is to add a thin flat plate to create an artificial bottom for the hole. Then the pocket operation will work as desired, including all the way through.

The added plate can be buried somewhere in the middle of the hole or it can be made very thin and added to the bottom of the workpiece. This approach does mess up the appearance of the overall design, so it should be done as a last step if you need to output the design for some other purpose.

Thanks GeneFC,

I have already used that trick, and will use it again for this task. I wanted to be sure is was the Path features (or current lack of) and not me missing something.

I am fairly new to CNC'ing and to using Freecad for it, so I still lack confidence in my abilities in both area's. This is just a retirement hobby for me so I cannot justify or afford commercial software to do what I want, besides Freecad is a great tool and deserves support.

Good to know I'm getting it.
