how can I set up a working plane that has been rotated about two axes?

Post by FlyingaHull »

Hi -
I need some help in learning how to set up a model where a portion of it is lined up with with a double rotation... for example first 5 degrees in pitch followed by 5 degrees in yaw. I was able to create a proper working 'surface' by patching pads together with an angle cut, but the working plane on this surface comes out tilted - still being aligned in the original coordinate system. Is there a way to rotate a working plane about its normal axis? The only post I found on this topic was back in 2014, so I'm wondering if there are any more recent approaches or tools for doing this.

Thank you

In the current stable version which you use this is not possible directly - at least not in Part Design Workbench. But you can create a sketch and position that arbitrarily in space. Especially useful might be the incremental mode of the Placement dialog. There you can first rotate in one direction and afterwards independently in some other.

Please keep in mind that you can move only the first sketch in a series of subsequently added features. You cannot move a sketch that is attached to a face (which you need e.g. for pocketing).

I just got back into it so this is a late thank you to ChrisB,
Yes I found that using the Euler angle feature in the placement dialog worked well for what I needed.

I'm glad it helped.

For completeness, i sometimes use the following workflow
> insert a cube
> position/rotate cube to your liking
> attach sketch to face of cube
> make sure, the sketch is selected in the tree view
> select (in sketcher workbench) Sketch > Reorient Sketch from top menu
> you will be asked if you want to detach your sketch from the selected face, answer "yes"
> cancel the following dialogue
> delete inserted cube
