Rotate a Sketch

Post by fusan »

Hi

I tried to find info about rotating a sketch, but didnt have the luck.
Im trying to rotate a sketch. When I use (rotate) the sketch rotates around the the plane axis. How do
I get to rotate it arround its own axis?

Hi fusan, in a Sketch you can create a Construction line segment, and in the Part Design WB > Revolve tool select "Sketch Axis 0" instead of "Vertical sketch axis" shown in this image:

The result of rotating Sketch in the attached file about "Sketch Axis 0" (the blue Construction line segment in the Sketch) is the gray torus.

Things might be different in 0.17 Part Design Next though.... I haven't tried yet.

Or you can use Part WB > Revolve and select an edge or line segment anywhere in the model. The other toroids were created by doing a Part WB > Revolve of Sketch about the color-coded edges of the Cube.

Thank you for your answer.
I didnt want to revolve the sketch but just rotate it. I need to Sweep the sketch on a path that is 45 deg to it, so I only need to rotate the
sketch so it is oeroendicular to the path.
Is that possible?

When you close the sketch you can adjust position and rotation in the tree. For the more advanced replacement doubleclick the three tiny dots at the end of the placement line

Thank you for the answer Willem, but its not what I was looking for.
The Dialog you mention, by clicking on the 3 dotts, is the same as when you click Edit -> Placement. What happens when I use this method
is that the sketch is rotated arround the Plane Axis and thats is not what I want. I want it to rotate arround the sketch axis.

I attached a picture of the drawing. What I need is to rotate the green circle so that it is perpendicular to the line that is running from its
centerpoint. Im using v0.16 of Freecad btw.

Hi fusan,

I guess you want something like this? :?:

We can change the center of rotation to match your sketch's center.
For example the circle center is at -70 on the x axis so we can :
-check the "Apply incremental changes to object placer";
-set the rotation center at -70 on the x axis;
-chose to rotate around the z axis by what angle we need;

I did it on:
OS: Windows 7
Word size of OS: 64-bit
Word size of FreeCAD: 64-bit
Version: 0.16.6706 (Git)
Build type: Release
Branch: releases/FreeCAD-0-16
Hash: f86a4e411ff7848dea98d7242f43b7774bee8fa0
Python version: 2.7.8
Qt version: 4.8.7
Coin version: 4.0.0a
OCC version: 6.8.0.oce-0.17

P.S. Credits go to Willem. I just did what he said above. Thank you Willem.

Hi Fusan,
please check my video on Dailymotion. I'm using a trick to extrude a sketch, the result is a surface I can draw sketches on it. It's a good trick for to design sweep or loft shapes.

Hello,
I am still struggling with rotating a sketch, even if several persons told how to above..
When doing as Grey says above it seems to work. Enterring the angle and it looks good. BUT when clicking the ok-button the sketch immediately jumps back to its initial position. Can someone kindly please help out here, I am so frustrated over this!

This is most likely because the sketch was mapped to some face (aka attached). The placement of the sketch is then fully determined by the placement of the face, and it is impossible to rotate it in FC v0.16.

You can Draft Clone the sketch and rotate the clone. You can also detach the sketch (look for "Reorient sketch" in menus of PartDesign and Sketcher workbenches, apply it and accept the detachment, but dismiss the actual reorient. Then you'll be able to rotate it.)

In FC v0.17, you can rotate an attached sketch by editing its superPlacement property.
