Trim extra material

Post by John1948 »

OS: Windows 10
Word size of OS: 64-bit
Word size of FreeCAD: 64-bit
Version: 0.16.6706 (Git)
Build type: Release
Branch: releases/FreeCAD-0-16
Hash: f86a4e411ff7848dea98d7242f43b7774bee8fa0
Python version: 2.7.8
Qt version: 4.8.7
Coin version: 4.0.0a
OCC version: 6.8.0.oce-0.17

I created a three legged internal brace which had straight sides and put it inside a tapered cylinder which causes the legs to extend past the outside of the cylinder. I thought there would be an easy way to remove the excess material on he outside of the cylinder but have not been able to find any tutorials or posts that seem to address this operation. Being new to FreeCAD and 3D drawing in general perhaps I am not using the proper terminology. The items I have found when I searched for "trim" etc. seem to deal with lines and not objects.

I've attached my FreeCAD file which will hopefully clarify what I'm trying to do.

Thank you.

Hi, welcome to the forum,

There is no trim function to do an operation like this, this is not Autocad.

Delete the array.
Make a copy of sketch, this is sketch002 and modify like I done in my file.
Rotate sketch002 and the hollow inside of the rotated sketch is the shape of this new rotation.
In the part workbench make an intersection of the new rotation and the pad.
Make a new array

When you really want to built this, think how you will mount the inner part in this sloping cylinder

Hi John1948,
You could give Part-Design-workbench a try. There you can use 'external' faces for your sketch and make the size of your brace dependent on the inner radius.
I guess you have to cleanly rebuild your model.
I attached a demo in Part-Design-wb.

One thing should be mentioned: HoWil's model is made with the 0.17 development version of FreeCAD. It provides improved possibilities for attaching sketches, especially to curved faces. You can install both versions in parallel.

I remodeled your object and omitted the problematic stuff by construction with using expressions.

I modeled the inner wing orthogonal to your's thus saving the cube and the cut.
I would have liked to use the part design polar pattern, but I had difficulties defining the rotation center at the right place.

I omitted the final fuse because the model's size increased from 22K to 160K.

BTW, why did you enter the height of the top border as an expression?

Thank you for answering my question. I've been busy and this is the first chance I've had to get back online. I designed the part with the intention of making it on a 3D printer so I don't need to be concerned with assembly. It is going to be used with additional parts so I dimensioned it in a way that I thought would make it easier for me to design the additional parts with a minimal amount of work.
