Creating a pocket in another pad from a .svg file?

Post by thisisnotaspoon »

Hi, I'm new here so hopefully this isn't too much a beginner question. The end result I'm aiming for is to 3D print a part with a logo 'engraved' into the surface (or rather a rectangle with the logo made up of negative space within it and therefore standing out from the surrounding surface, but not proud of the face).

I've created a logo as a path in inkscape, which basically consists of the logo as the negative space inside another shape.

I've then opened it up in FreeCAD and in the draft workbench "join selected objects into 1" (up arrow)

Then in part workbench used the "make a cut of the two shapes" tool to subtract the inside shape from the outside. Then joined a part of the logo which was left floating to the outer part. FreeCAD has labeled the resulting object "Fusion".

I've then copied and pasted this into the actual part I'm working on so it's sitting there as a 2D object alongside my 3D one (which was created as a sketch then pad).

What I can't now figure out how to do is take the logo I have made and make a pocket in the part with it?

Hello.

Welcome to FreeCAD and the forum.

Next steps would be:
- use part extrude on your 2D logo to get a 3D solid
- position logo 3D space using placement or draft move/draft rotate
- do a boolean cut

You may follow this tutorial and this video to get a a basic idea of the workflow.

Thanks, that did actually work, although I'd tried it before but it did all sorts of weird things. That's why I was re-trying it as a pocket rather than a boolean cut.

I think it was creating an extra part when I extruded it so I ended up with 'fusion' 'extrude1' and 'extrude001', where extrude was surplus?
