Noob question

Postby bryanb » Tue Apr 18, 2017 11:50 pm

I am following along with the BasicPartDesignTutorial Part02 and am stuck trying to make the pocket tool work.
When I close the fully constrained sketch that is on the back surface, the sketch disappears and I am left with just the block. If I click the Pocket tool, it complains there is not sketch on the surface.
If I edit the sketch again the sketch appears but the Pocket tool deactivates.
Any Ideas what I am doing wrong?

Thanks

Hello Bryan.

Welcome to FreeCAD and the forum.
Your sketch seems not to be mapped to the back face.

You should have first selected the back face and then the "Create new sketch" tool.

You can map your sketch to a face manually by using the Sketcher_MapSketch-Tool

thanks for the reply Roland. I thought I had done that but I recreated the whole model again and made sure I did select the back face and mapped the new sketch to it but got the same result. So then I tried the manual approach with the sketcher - MapSketch tool and still get the same result.
When I select the back face, it does not turn bright green, it just changes shade a little. Am I missing something in the face selection process?

You probably have too many solids visible. Only the newest one should be visible in the 3D view, so everything else in the history tree should be greyed out. To toggle visibility on and off, select a thing in the history tree and press Spacebar.

After only that last solid is visible, select the desired face and then click the Map Sketch To Face tool.

Finally am able to complete the tutorial. What I needed to do was use the "create sketch" from the face tools menu in the combo view tasks tab. Couldn't get it to work from the other "create sketch" tools.
Hope this helps someone else.
