3D dimensions in TechDraw

Post by Msegade »

I want to make some 3D dimensions in the TechDraw module in an isometric view, the problem is that the dimensions lines are perpendicular to the projected line, and I want them in the direction of the axis.

Is this possible?

No. Is this a common convention?

Yes.

Following image quickly made in the drawing module of a proprietary CAD program.

The text stays aligned like in techdraw... It would be just a matter of skewing the extension lines actually...

Look at ISO 5456-3... I think Normand is right.

On that third link, I can translate the relevant French text:
Dimensioning should be avoided in axonometric views. If it is necessary, the same rules as those used for orthogographic views should be employed.
To amend what I succinctly replied at the end of my lunch break: I don't think dimensioning axonometric views is considered an "official" convention in either of the existing norms (ISO, ANSI...), but it is commonly used nonetheless. And yes, the dim extension lines should be parallel to the XYZ axes.

So now in 0.19 I assume this has been implemented, since in the wiki it says it was introduced in 0.18:

https://wiki.freecadweb.org/Basic_TechDraw_Tutorial:
This drawing was produced in v0.18. It shows dimensions in the proper format for an isometric view. In v0.17 the extension lines will be perpendicular to the edge rather than aligned with the axes.
Im using 0.19 and I still see 3D dimensions perpendicular to the edge. I have gone through the Preferences trying to find a setting to set the behavior but can't. How does one enable it?

Hi
Probably should start new post as this is an old post but
Do see what you are asking and do not find settings but have attached a file that I opened in 0.18 0.19 0.20 and it shows what you want in 0.18.
File is just quick, did not link the dimensions. Maybe try your file in 0.18

Maybe it is a regression bug (I can open a bug report), or was this planned?

because techdraw is slow, i dimension in 3d, so the problem does not arise. is that a solution for you too?
