Can't open anything

Post by Blue_Ice »

Hi all,

I just installed FreeCAD on a new computer. When I open FreeCAD, it goes through the splash screen and starts with the "Start" workbench. Then, when I go to open any file at all, the file loads in the progress bar at the bottom, and then FreeCAD crashes spectacularly- no "FreeCAD has closed unexpectedly." or "There was a system error."

I think I broke something, but I don't know what it is... :)

Terminal output:

Code: Select all

First time I'v seen that one... I think?

Is your Ubuntu Linux install actually 32 bit? That's the first thing that jumps out at me. If it is, can you run FreeCAD with gdb? It might provide more info with a back trace.

After some thorough online searching, I found that my video card is causing me issues. The issue can be solved by running this:

Code: Select all

export LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1
... unfortunately, this means that all Mesa3D rendering is done software-side. Oh well :)

Hi
Just wondering ....

Since you have a 64 bit cpu, why don't you install the 64bit version of "(whichever)-bunutu"?

What is your GPU?

1333 MHz is not much for a new PC. Seems like a low power laptop?

I would have thought that the newer Intel graphics chipsets would be fine for graphics acceleration.

Jim, if for example the laptop has only 2GB of RAM there would be no gain with a 64-Bit OS which requires more memory I think.

That's a good question!
The reason is that I only have 2 GB of RAM. The amount of RAM taken up by system background 64-bit operations and 64-bit applications is noticeably greater than equal 32-bit operations and applications when you have only 2 GB of RAM.
It's important for me that I can do things that require lots of RAM (keep many windows open, renderings), so I guess I'd prefer more RAM over processing power.

It's a new laptop for me (desktop just died), but it was made in 2009. Sorry for the confusion about that :)

I don't think so. It's probably frequency scaling (power management), notice BogoMIPS. In my case, light load:

Code: Select all

CPU MHz: 1200.000
BogoMIPS: 4389.96
Heavy load:

Code: Select all

CPU MHz: 2201.000
BogoMIPS: 4389.96
Even funnier, lscpu have no idea about real i3/i5/i7 frequency. My CPU real frequency under heavy load is much higher (3000-3200MHz) than reported by lscpu;)

That's true, but can I cite Linus?
Linus Torvalds wrote:The biggest single reason to go 64-bit is exactly because of physical address space. Your virtual address space needs to bea multiple of the physical one: when you hit 1GB of RAM, 32-bit virtual memory is no longer acceptable. You literally do need more virtual memory than physical.
