crash when dimensioning in Draft

Post by fandaL »

Hello,
1) I have problem with crashes of Windows 7 when using dimension tool in Draft workbench. It didn't make problem in the last unstable 0.14 version:

OS: Windows 7
Word size: 64-bit
Version: 0.14.3683 (Git)
Branch: master
Hash: 382e055e9b2d3159de79e3f56ef452b538b51012
Python version: 2.7.6
Qt version: 4.8.5
Coin version: 4.0.0a
SoQt version: 1.6.0a
OCC version: 6.6.0

2) I noticed this problem in version 0.14 stable 32bit. When using dimension tool in Draft, FreeCAD froze and wrote a message "Unhandled unknown exception caught in GUIApplication::notify." Dimension number and arrows wasn't depicted, like in the picture enclosed below. If I didn't click to work place, it was possible to close FreeCAD normally. Windows crashed immediately (when making dimension) or sometime after several seconds or minutes.

OS: Windows 7
Word size: 32-bit
Version: 0.14.3700 (Git)
Branch: releases/FreeCAD-0-14
Hash: 32f5aae0a64333ec8d5d160dbc46e690510c8fe1
Python version: 2.6.2
Qt version: 4.5.2
Coin version: 3.1.0
SoQt version: 1.4.1

3) After that I installed 0.14 64bit version, because I have 64bit system, but the problem is similar. Using way: Open FreeCAD + Open new empty document + switch to Draft + create Dimension. Now it creates dimension without error message. Dimension has number and dots. FreeCAD works properly after this (it doesn't freeze), but windows crashes during last mouse click making dimension or several seconds (minutes) after that.

OS: Windows 7
Word size: 64-bit
Version: 0.14.3700 (Git)
Branch: releases/FreeCAD-0-14
Hash: 32f5aae0a64333ec8d5d160dbc46e690510c8fe1
Python version: 2.7.6
Qt version: 4.8.5
Coin version: 4.0.0a
SoQt version: 1.6.0a
OCC version: 6.6.0

Windows 7 Home Premium SP1

Thank you for your time.
Have a nice day.

Greetings fandaL, I tried but can't reproduce this so unfortunately I can't offer any real help, other than to post my findings with the intent that this will help those people more knowledgeable than I more quickly determine the root cause of your crash.

I can't reproduce it either. I wonder if it is graphics driver related.

Thanks for testing. I will check it again, if new FreeCAD release is available. It's not urgent.

Check your cpu and GPU fans are turning properly and that dust has not built up blocking your fan's or their filters.

Sometime back I had similar problems a a few occasions, I was getting strange crashes and lock ups in Linux that only seemed to happen when running FreeCAD. The problem twice was dust had blocked up the GPU and CPU and it was just that FreeCAD happens to be the only thing that in anyway pushed my system (compiling errors due to CPU and FreeCAD presumably due to the GPU). The third time my GPU card was about to die, which it shortly after did. In these three cases the problems were solved by cleaning twice and getting another GPU once. :-)

Yes I honestly don't know what's happening here... The fact that other people with the same version of FreeCAD and the same OS version as yours don't have that crash, indicates that it is probably a problem specific to your system.

Anyway, FreeCAD itself should not go up to cause the OS to crash... It is most probably a deeper problem underneath.

I surely would check if your display drivers are up-to-date first. Then maybe test if other opengl applications are working correctly, such as blender, or opengl-based games.

When I did a google search on your BSOD error (BAD_POOL_HEADER) it looks like a device driver error.
