this leads me to the conlusion that the planes in the bearing holder tutorial must be solids -> not planes but thin cubes with nonzero thickness - right?
No wrong...they are a feature called a datum plane that simply do not exist in your version of FreeCAD.

Look honestly I would have worked this out in the first post if you had

1)posted your Help about FreeCAD in the first post
2)posted a link to which tutorials you were talking about.

Those tutorials WILL NOT WORK for you in your version of FreeCAD. You need the code in the Assembly branch which is in far to much of an experimental state to use at this time.

Just do a different tutorial.

You are referring to this one and its Part 2, in the FreeCAD wiki, I assume?

The tutorial was originally written to show how to use Datum planes, a new feature, that will one day end up in FreeCAD. At the time it was written a lot of us thought that the Assembly branch code would be merged a lot sooner. But it has been delayed for good reasons unfortunately.

OK since this is not the first time someone has missed or not understood the warning box at the top of the page ....I have edited the actual text its self and inserted bold text in the first paragraph stating clearly that this tutorial will not work.

Not the ideal way to edit a wiki but hopefully it will be more clear.

hmm,
what lead me the to believe that it could work for me was the statement
won't be included in FreeCAD until version 0.15
so i cecked my version, and found 15...

sorry for the irritation.

In the next step, I would like to extrude the sketch down to the end of the 'construction box', following the desription of the part design pad feature http://www.freecadweb.org/wiki/index.ph ... Design_Pad.
I thought the 'up to face' option would be what I need:
the sketch is on one face of the box, now i select it, try to pad up to the opposite face.
However, the faces are not selectable. The description mentions 'up to a face in the support'. Where can I find something about what a support is and how to make the box beeing part of the support?

Thanks!

P.S.: I really read through the documentation, however not yet manage to efficiently find what I'm looking for...

I think we should outright remove these pages from the Tutorials category.

We are still very early in the development schedule, v0.14 just came out. This warning was meant to say the final release of v0.15. Which is probably at least a year out.

Plus, I would have thought this text made it clear:
The only way to get these features is to compile FreeCAD from this special development branch

I changed the warning on those two pages to read in part:
These features won't be included in FreeCAD until possibly the final release of version 0.15.

I marked both pages for translation after the changes.

I still think we should remove the "Tutorials" category tag. Leaving these two pages easily accessible to end users only brings confusion when an overwhelming majority of them won't ever compile the required special development branch.

Thanks Norm, I'll delete my post in the Wiki section asking for translation...
Edit:
I deleted that post...

Perhaps when removing the tutorial tag, it should be linked to from the Assembly project page?

Marking a page for translation is a required step after any change is made to the English/original page. This sends the info to translated pages that they have obsolete content. Translating them/updating them still has to be done by translators.

ATM there's only an Italian translation for the bearingholder tutorials. I honestly would not push on translating those pages for the reasons I already mentioned. They are really intended to experienced users who know how to compile a special Git branch and want to test this branch. The interest of this to end users is severely limited. This is why I have not bothered to work on the French translation yet. I haven't even compiled that branch myself.
