i installed freecad and when i open it i get the above error

Can you please tell us which Windows version you are using, and the filename of the installer you downloaded.

One thing that may be relevant (or not) is the brand of your PC's graphics chipset (if I'm to believe this thread pertaining to a different software with the same error)

i'm using windows 7 ultimate 64bit and the installer i'm using is FreeCAD-0.16.6706.f86a4e4-WIN-x64_Installer-1 and the chipset i'm using is intel 6th gen core processor

You should have a look at Windows' event viewer. Therefore go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event viewer. Then in one of the sections you should find an error message with some more details.
