About funding and all that
Interesting read: https://krita.org/item/funding-krita/
Some people asked me about a "donate" button, there was one on the sourceforge page, that linked to Jürgen's paypal account I think. We could place that button on the freecadweb homepage, no?
In any case, the money question is becoming recurrent... More and more people are wanting to pay... Maybe it is time to think of good uses we could do with money? There is also the problem of organizing this, I suppose if you begin to gather a significative amount of money, you need a kind of structure (foundation, etc...) I have no idea of how much effort and work is needed to put in setting up and maintaining a foundation...

Re: About funding and all that
Good idea - i.e. the server doesn't pay for itself usually
I'd keep it as a one-person fund unless there is too much money (rarely a problem ).
I'm thinking maybe there are some "umbrella" foundations for open source projects? Maybe http://www.fsf.org could help...

Interesting article indeed... It doesn't make the adventure very appetizing...
I heard a couple of nightmarish stories about the big umbrella foundations, such as beings forced to hand over the copyright to them...

Sounds awful... I'd stick with a one person fund unless there are tax implications for him/her.yorik wrote:Interesting article indeed... It doesn't make the adventure very appetizing...

Very approximately, what sort of amount of money, over what typical period, are we talking about?yorik wrote:In any case, the money question is becoming recurrent... More and more people are wanting to pay... Maybe it is time to think of good uses we could do with money?

Would it be feasible to cooperate with the document foundation?Maybe let them run the founding and juridic part and then a steering group of the core developers would assign the money to projects of their choice. The document foundation is based in Germany an if i am not wrong FreeCAD has its roots in Germany...

I have no idea, actually. Just that a lot of people are asking about itjmaustpc wrote:Very approximately, what sort of amount of money, over what typical period, are we talking about?
Maybe... In any case it's one more idea. It's good to gather all of them here.mandersson wrote:Would it be feasible to cooperate with the document foundation?
I'm also thinking that for now it's better to leave things as they are. But let's keep thinking.

Maybe it's worth to fire them an email and ask for advice? FreeCAD isn't a small project and it fits perfectly in TDF manifesto..

Yes, that cannot harm anyway.PrzemoF wrote:Maybe it's worth to fire them an email and ask for advice?
Another idea comes to my mind, but I'm really not sure how worth it is: Bitcoin. With bitcoin, we could have an account that is not tied to anybody personnally... Of course it has its problems too I suppose. But it might be worth looking at it too. Anyone has some experience with bitcoin?
