labels for Sweep and Loft operations

Post by piffpoof »

After 18 months using FreeCAD I have just figured something out, or at least think I have.

With respect to the "Utility to Sweep" and "Utility to Loft" operations of the Part Workbench, when making a Sweep or Loft operation through the GUI, there are two selection panels with 4 movement arrows between them. The labels above the two panels are:

"Vertex/Edge/Wire/Face Loft"
and
"Vertex/Edge/Wire/Face Sweep"

These labels never made sense to me until this morning I was working on a question posted on the forum. I had figured out how they worked but couldn't make any sense of the actual wording.

Might I suggest that the label over the lefthand panel read:

"Vertices/Edges/Wires/Faces"

or possibly better:

"Items available for Loft operation:
(Vertices/Edges/Wires/Faces)
"

And over the righthand panel:

"Items selected for Loft"

With the Sweep operation the same label text but the word "Sweep" substituted for the word "Loft"

I think this change would make the intent and purpose of the selection panels more obvious.

I think the correct term for these would be "profiles", at least with a Sweep they are called "profiles" and a sweep of course also has a "path".

The list in theory at least, only provides "valid" profiles but there are exceptions and complications, for example a vertex/point can only be a first or last profile not for example 2nd of 3.

thanks Jim

I amend the suggestion to have the labels read:

On the lefthand Loft panel:
"Profiles available for Loft operation:
(Vertices/Edges/Wires/Faces)
"

And the righthand Loft panel:

"Profiles selected for Loft"

On the lefthand Sweep panel:
"Profiles available for Sweep operation:"

And the righthand Sweep panel:

"Profile selected for Sweep"

I agree with this proposed change. But create an issue on Mantis because this topic will be overlooked/forgotten. Mantis' whole purpose is to track bugs, feature requests and proposals such as this one.

Done as issue #0002429

Listed as a "Feature Request" which seems a bit grandiose but there wasn't really any other option (Proposal might be a better fit)

Thanks for the reminder, I must admit I had forgotten about this one myself...

Thanks @piffpoof of the Mare Nostrum, this was always confusing to me and a lot of other users I know! Thought is was one of those "Lost in Translation" things.

Bravo!
