Great find. I don't know much about the FEM Workbench, but I have seen that much work has been done there, so that part should have improved significantly since the talk.

Just watching this now; he has a list of OSS tools needed to design a racecar, and it's interesting how much of this FreeCAD does or will soon cover:
  • 3D CAD (✓)
  • Finite element analysis (✓)
  • Suspension geometry modeling (need dynamics support)
  • CFD software for aerodynamic modeling (sorta 1/2✓)
  • CNC controller (mostly covered by Path module)

The blessing and the curse, everything, to everybody, all the time. When in trouble at the beginning, he goes to a python script.
FreeCAD spans the gap between, "I want to model this replacement part for my broken shower handle to 3d-print", to, "I want to model and analyze my high performance race car".
Simply amazing.

Is he on the forum? AFAIK he has never asked anything in the regard of FEM. If he has not asked anything I hardly can believe he has used FEM.

Review of FreeCAD 3D modelling software:

recommends FC for personal modelling.

Interesting find, fandaL!

It's mostly positive which is good, but one thing made my eyebrow twitch:
If I have to lodge a complaint at all it’s that there is no layering system included; all display options seem to be controlled by object. Anyone who’s ever worked in the CAD field is going to find that frustrating

By "CAD field" he obviously meant "AutoCAD", because that's the CAD system that uses layers (as well as others that copy it).

For the past 10 years I've used parametric CAD at work and the software only provides layers in the drawing environment - and I hardly ever use this functionality.
