Is FreeCAD the right CAD software for what I wanna do ?

Post by Maitregoupil »

Hello,

I'm a french woodworker and I actually use a CNC machine for 2.5D wood milling (I use mainly Inkscape / CamBam / EdingCNC).

My wish would be to design my own 3D surfaces in order to create original wood panels like this one for example : (this picture comes from Pinterest)

I'm currently a completly newbie with 3D CAD and with FreeCAD, do you think FreeCAD could be the right tool to design such surfaces ? I only wannt to produce .stl files in order to use them with a classical CAM software.

Or maybe is there some more appropriate software ? (I'm only looking for free software !)

Thank you for helping :)

FC is fantastic software, however for such things I would try Blender and Blender-CAM + special add-on.

Have a look here:

Maybe you need a special feature, go into Macros_recipes and Code_snippets, Topological_data_scripting.
My macros on Gist.github here complete macros Wiki and forum.

Thank you for your answers, microelly2s nurbs editor could perhaps match my needs.
I've installed it using the addons installer but at this time I can't launch any furnished example.

Do I need to install other optional packages to try them ?
I've simply tried to copy the python examples in the python console, is that the right way to proceed ?

Kind regards,
Chris

Hi Chris,
I am sorry, until now I also do only know his impressive videos. I was also not able to easily change a face after installing his wb.
Maybe you can ask microelly2 in a private message.... I think he is usually always interested in new applications for nurbs (see shoe example).
