Downloading 3D parts from the web

Dear all,

While seaching the web, I discoverer huge 3D databases were available.

I found at lease 4 databases:
* Traceparts.
* FirstCAD library.
* Google sketchup 3Dwarehouse (Sketchup only format).
* Part CommunityD.

Do you know others?

Most of those libraries provide step format, which is fine for FreeCAD.
Are there plans to integrate a meta-seach / downloading engine in FreeCAD.

This would be great!

Thigiverse has some FCStd files;)
There was some discussion about openPLM integration in past.
I think we should design an abstraction layer for the integration of a remote library.
I should be more lighwight than a full PLM solution.
At least the defination should be be done by the core developers. And afterwards volunteers can decide if they want to implent it for their prefered hosting facility.
I'd like to help with the thingiverse adapater as i allready spend some time working with thier latest API.
But i see two things that we hav to consider.
1. The Properties of such imported Parts in an assembly and therefore in the assembly module.
2. I think i would be nice to talk to the OpenPLM people about an interface for them and what i should have in common for the lighwight sharing/downloading api.
On the one hand i don't think that everyone needs a full PLM system and i don't think that we should force anyone to use such.

That's just my two cents
Officicaly there has been no plans published bisides OpenPLM integarion.

- some discussion about an open source CAD models repository.

As for existing repositories... there's 3DContentCentral from Dassault Systèmes, registration is required.

But there is not much progress in the defintion of interfaces and not implementation available yet.

Of course, but reviving an existing topic would be more useful instead of writing yet another one thus fragmenting further the discussion

Best would be to choose one topic as centralization and post links to other discussions, write a summary of what's been discussed, goals to set... A new topic repeating the same subject again is just running in circles.

I agree. I think the previous posts are not limited OpenPLM. So i think the topic with the longest history would be suitable.

As looked into the history it seems to me, that jriegel and Jdurston have contriubuted the most.
