File Export... Save as type sticky option?

Post by marmil »

Hi all. I've been dabbling with FreeCAD for a bit now using it to make parts for 3d printing.

Once I have a model finished I've noticed that every time I do a File -> Export... I have to change "Save as type" and reselect "Mesh formats (*.stl, etc)". Is there a way to make this sticky/default to whatever save type was last selected? In my case I always want to export as .stl or .obj format.

OS: Windows 7
Word size: 64-bit
Version: 0.14.3700 (Git)
Branch: releases/FreeCAD-0-14
Hash: 32f5aae0a64333ec8d5d160dbc46e690510c8fe1
Python version: 2.7.6
Qt version: 4.8.5
Coin version: 4.0.0a
SoQt version: 1.6.0a
OCC version: 6.6.0

It's a very interesting program and I'm learning more all the time.

IIRC if you type the extension, for ex: myobj.stl that will force export as stl, not the default in drop-down menu... Would that be enough?

Export does not work like that for me here. Adding the extension, (.stl) on a file name in the export dialog with the default format pre-selected (.svg) results in no file being created on export, though the file name does show up in the File > Recent files menu. :?

Good suggestion. Typing the extension in did not work for me either though.

I would be partially ok with that solution if it worked. However, unless you switch to the file format extension type you want it does not show other files of that type in the folder you're saving to. Thus if you were trying to remember the name or version number of a previously exported file so you could appropriately rename or version up your new export it's not as convenient.

Hmm remembering the name of the last export could be nice. Gimp does that too, as well as blender.

Anyway, indeed the autodetection of the format based on the extension doesn't seem to work anymore. I'm pretty sure it worked before, does someone else remember?

I don't remember to have test this, but I'm pretty sure I have read it :P

Indeed the remembering of the export name is a feature that someone "ask" me today too. He say that it's loud to have to type the name each time...
