Part WB Thickness Function Enhancement

Post by jmh »

See viewtopic.php?f=3&t=8508 for the details but it seems that the functionality of the Thickness tool runs into issues when an interior wall has multiple faces. Given the flixibility of FreeCAD these are easily worked around I think but it would be a nice to have in the future I suspect.

AFAIK FreeCAD only calls upon a function from the OCC kernel, there may not be anything the FreeCAD devs can do about the Thickness tool behavior.

It starts to become complex when you have internal structures. For example by default he thickness is applied to the outside of the faces around the external faces and the relative outside (which means the inside of the hole) of the interior features.

So if you make a box (100mmx200mm) and put 6mm mounting holes and then apply a default thickness of 1mm....
the result would be a hollowed out box with outside dimensions of 102mmx202mm with 4mm mounting holes

This may or may not be what a user would expect. If you use a negative number then the thickness goes inside the outer faces of the solid. The inner hole would now remain at the specified size.
