Re: Sketch - External Geometry - Datum Plane

I just download the example file that you created to show how to use expression to place datum plane, however the datum plance placement value to me appear to be absolute and not expressions, What am I missing? If it was absolute, it won't adjust itself when Pad length is changes. ;) If you look in...

what about the origin planes, are they resizeable?
No, I don't think so. They should resize according to the size of the model.

Ok will go ahead and try that.

Why do yo need to see them? Just select the proper one from the list and draw the first rectangular sketch, constraint to those 40ft and they will become as big as the body.
To use as a visual aid.

Re: Origin Planes and Datum plane size - PartDesign

Everything should automatically update to be always slightly larger than your model. So as you go designing you always have them visible. The scenario I have is I have a imported model in step file format of a shipping container. When I create new body the origin planes are microscopic in compariso...

In the properties of the DatumPlane you can switch ResizeMode to manual and set length and width.
Cool, what about the origin planes, are they resizeable?

Origin Planes and Datum plane size - PartDesign

Have done a bit of a search and couldn't seem to work out if there is away to resize the planes. Firstly with the orgin planes XY, XZ, YZ and any datum planes the user adds? For if I select the Origin , in the combo view under view tab there is 'size' and reads values 14.4, 14.4, 12.0 with respect t...

Re: Sketch - External Geometry - Datum Plane

You're almost right. The fine tuning I proposed is to use expressions in datum plane placement values to keep the sync. I attached a very KISS example to show you what I mean. You can change the Pad length and the datum plane with the Pocket will follow thanks to expressions. ;) With that way, you ...

Re: Working with a STEP file to make parametric copy

Once again thankyou NormandC for your tips and advice. I'm thinking maybe I can copy certain elements, like you advised, so not to reinvent the wheel and edit those, and then create a new model for most of the container. I'm not from a drafting or design background, never having used solidworks. I d...

Re: Working with a STEP file to make parametric copy

Haha, yes I haven't grabbed the latest version, but will do. It seems not that long ago that 0.17 became the stable release and now 0.18 is on the verge of being so. Awesome stuff devs. Ok, understand you on the Defeaturing workbench. As far as wanting to make the shipping container parametric it wa...
