Re: "Feed and Speed Calculator addon" integration & update including scripted creation of ToolControllers

It’s a nice improvement and will be appreciated. I ask because milling tools cost money, are only available in certain sizes, and even if available requires shipping time, so I would hate to see a user unable to tailor their job to their existing tools.

Keep up the good work!

Re: "Feed and Speed Calculator addon" integration & update including scripted creation of ToolControllers

Just read this thread, and bravo on the F&S integration!

One question I had is if the tool controllers generated are limited to tools existing in a tool library? I ask because I wasn’t clear if output was limited to tools owned by the user, or if it generated arbitrary recommendations?

Re: thread milling?

Hey Brad. It’s weird to me too. Here’s the link. Am I conflating two different tools?

Re: thread milling?

I just got a newsletter the other day and learned that thread forming tools move but do not cut metal. The threads are stronger because of this, and there are no chips generated.

Re: Generate toolpath for convex shapes

One other thing about that--there's no point in milling those from the two flipped sides because the inner hole requires drilling on the barbed hose fittings. Once you mount it to drill, you can also mill out the barbs and external contours using circles...

Re: Generate toolpath for convex shapes

I’d weigh carefully the consequences of them breaking versus the ease of drilling and threading a hole and inserting a standard fitting first. You could in theory make them yourself on a lathe, or by CNC, but why bother.

Re: thread milling?

Just wanted to say thanks for the discussion. It's always nice to learn, and to benefit from others experience. I have no experience with turning, and limited experience with milling, so the finer points are sometimes lost on me. Just for giggles, does anyone know why the single-profile style cutter...

Re: thread milling?

I looked at MSC Direct and sorted by external only (only 28 options compared to 138 for internal) and I can't see an obvious difference with this 16 TPI, External Single Profile Thread Mill. https://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/60374675 https://cdn.mscdirect.com/global/images/ProductImages/6037...

Re: thread milling?

The other day I noticed that there are tools for internal threading, for external threading, and for both. I have no idea what the difference is and why one would be only usable for internal or external, but not both--anyone know any more about this?

Re: thread milling?

Nice to see pictures of the result :D

Am I wrong in thinking outside threads require two changes:
1–offset the radius of the tool path by the diameter of the tool.
2-change the approach and retract points to outside the radius of the tool path

Best,
Josh
