Re: Teardrop Shape | Part Design (/ sketcher?)

You're right of course. Still, there is a need for these users to be part of a community to share knowledge. But abominations such as Discord have completely smashed the open-ness of the web by requiring registration to even just see the content. Just like f..g Facebook. I want the old Internet back...

Re: Teardrop Shape | Part Design (/ sketcher?)

My printer can do better than 45° - depending on material, layer height, size it can even go up to 60° 60 degrees from the vertical you mean? Last night I visited the old RepRap.org website trying to find info on teardrop holes (I couldn't). I was saddened to see it's now a ghost town, with "s...

Re: Teardrop Shape | Part Design (/ sketcher?)

One thing the above does not do is guarantee 270 degrees of arc. * I came to this by considering that a teardrop is a slot with one end having zero radius. Good idea. As shown in Shalmeneser's screenshot, you simply add a perpendicular constraint between the two lines. But come to think of it, it w...

Re: Teardrop Shape | Part Design (/ sketcher?)

This could be implemented in a number of ways. A new teardrop geometric shape in the Sketcher. You create a sketch containing one or more teardrops, then pocket it. A teardrop option in the PD Hole feature. Would require selecting an axis for the "up" direction. Sketch would only contain c...

Re: Help using Freecad

Hi there, Truth is, FreeCAD is a hodgepodge of a program, haphazardly built over the years by successive developers. Each people who added their brick had their own ideas. For example, it was never Juergen Rigel (the founder)'s intention to keep the Part Workbench as it is. It was a first step...

Re: Teardrop Shape | Part Design (/ sketcher?)

IMHO an ellipse wouldn't be suited. First there's a positioning issue: do I need to vertically offset the hole in relation to where a cylindrical hole would be? How wide and tall should it be? Then there's the fact the bolt going through would not have a proper fit (not being an engineer, I wouldn't...

Re: Import SolidWorks (sldprt) to FreeCAD

here what KiCAD can do in importing proprietary formats I didn't know there was a Solidworks PCB format. It might be useful to find out what exactly it is, and how Kicad imports it. Does it imports a 2D schematic only, or a 3D model? If it's the latter, it becomes very interesting for FreeCAD... It...

Re: Import SolidWorks (sldprt) to FreeCAD

I just remembered that the company I work for has a SolidWorks license, no more than 2 or 3 years old. It was purchased due to an employee (who no longer works here) being too stubborn (or too stup...) to adapt to Solid Edge. (there's a serious shortage of experienced technicians here in the ...

Re: Import SolidWorks (sldprt) to FreeCAD

IANAP (I'm not a programmer ;) ), but I think this should be done in two steps. Work on Parasolid data analysis. It either comes in text (*.x_t) or binary (.x_b) format. Work on SolidWorks import. Extract Parasolid data If possible read and reproduce the model history. But AFAIK most current commerc...
