Re: set import preference by Python not possible

Sorry, I was working on another PR related to IFC import and hoped for it to be merged first to prevent merge conflicts ( https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD/pull/2259/ ) - I'll submit the PR for the refactor tonight (or tomorrow)!

Re: Which IFC XSD should FreeCAD support?

Marking this topic as closed. We should match ifcopenshell's version, which is IFC4 ADD2 TC1. Also, a closer look at IfcDoc reveals that it merely encapsulates the HTML of the web spec. Therefore parsing from the IfcDoc will require two levels of parsing, one for STEP, and another for the HTML DOM. ...

Re: Edit selected object in Draft WB does nothing.

This is a half-built feature which will: - Highlight the wire of the object you want to edit in red, such that you can see it as an "x-ray" in front of other objects - Allow you to select edges and vertices of wires even though there are objects obscuring it When editing a complex 3D scene, this x-r...

Re: Is there a need for an actual IfcProject / Library element?

Thanks for the advice! I will not add GDAL as a hard dependency, but will try to write the feature in a way that scans for it first and provides a fallback. But no rush, I'll let the current state of the PR be tested first - because it really does need a lot of testing :)

Re: Is there a need for an actual IfcProject / Library element?

Just a heads up on the progress of this. Currently, all of the fields have to be manually typed in for the projected CRS metadata (e.g. EPSG name, description, zone, unit, ...). It would be much, much more desirable to instead have a CRS lookup system, similar to how in QGIS you can just lookup any ...

Re: Is there a need for an actual IfcProject / Library element?

The PR has progressed to a stage where exporting with an IfcProject is now possible. Here is the example IFC created: [ ... snip ... ] #19=IFCUNITASSIGNMENT((#13,#14,#15,#18)); #20=IFCDIRECTION((0.,1.,0.)); #21=IFCGEOMETRICREPRESENTATIONCONTEXT($,'Model',3,1.E-05,#9,#20); #22=IFCGEOMETRICREPRESENTAT...

Re: New Freecad / experienced Revit user questions and workflows on starting out

Just wanted to drop in and say I'm really enjoying this thread and good to see another with a strong architecture background on board. FreeCAD has a ton of potential and attempts like yours to help push it there are exactly what it needs right now.

Re: IFC import : Store Coordinate Reference System for better geometric import handling

I am in the middle of implementing this support in the other thread about IfcProject :) I definitely think building a "set to origin" during import feature is very useful that does what you describe! I'll have more time this week to work on it.

Re: Request for IfcProject icon?

Let's go for the dome :) it looks more fancy and we need a bit of traditional inspiration when starting projects! Also, coordinates are likely to move to the site container in a future IFC spec from what I hear.

Re: IfcXtreme

Agree that Grasshopper is not cross platform, nor is closed source Rhino, of which it is tied to. Many of us cannot use it. If you do want to pursue cross platform visual programming, perhaps look at Blender and Sverchok? Those are truly open source and open platform. Blender also connects to IFC wi...
