Just an update - With all your help I have been able to get the CAM I was working on sorted on screen. I just have not had time to test it all works on my machine.
Will post when I have done the tests.

My machine is a home built one with 3 Axis x,y z with a Katsu Router. I use it mainly for hardwoods like oak. i.e. this model is of Dr Who's Tardis and is only just over 3 inches tall and will be milled from one solid block. I tried using 3D Surface on one side, and the results appeared quite usable. The only wrinkle is that you need to select every flat surface. Gene - thanks for this pointer - I could not find 3D Surface only "Pocket 3D" but by selecting every flat surface I got the results shown below. Alm...

I plan to prep a longer than required piece of stock and clamp into a known location then run the cam 4 times i.e. 1 side at a time, then slice the ends off.

I am trying to learn FreeCad and have got on ok with the CAD side but am struggling with the CAM. My model is an easy shape but all the tools I tried on the CAM side have failed in one way of another. I am not sure if my CAD model is faulty of I am just not getting the CAM side.
