I assume that means I use sketches that are attached to datum planes instead of sketches 'on surface'. No, Sketches can be attached in exactly the same way as DP's. Attaching a DP to a face is as bad as attaching a sketch. Attach to Std planes or other sketches and use attachment offset/expressions.

How many videos have you seen that recommend joining sketches together?

Make a sketch, Pad it. Then mirror the pad. Easy.
