How many videos have you seen that recommend joining sketches together?

Make a sketch, Pad it. Then mirror the pad. Easy.

Make a sketch, mirror it and then join it to some thing else, not easy!

Which would you say is the best way to go?

If working in PD wb use a helix tool.

FC is a solid modeller, stop messing around with sketches, keep them simple and add/subtract from solids.....

Don't reverse the pocket. Or use the fillet tool.

"TEE" junctions are not allowed for PD sketches.

Trim the lines next to the circles.....
