Re: FreeCAD renderer is CPU bounded (at least for me)

@kwahoo Yes your principally right, but ;) The render in Coin is a so called RenderAction which traverse the tree and do all kind of stuff. E.g. decide which Level of Detail needs to be rendered and if the object (Part) is in the view frustum at all. And a lot more.... I noticed an interesting thin...

Re: FreeCAD renderer is CPU bounded (at least for me)

First of all, we will never reach 100% in GPU due to the fact that modern GPUs consist mostly out of things we don't need, like Pixel engines geard toward shader programs or texture-engines. So 50% is already pretty high. The newer the GPU hardware, the lower the GPU usage I would guess... The main...

Re: Series of articles about the pitfalls of parametric edit

FreeCAD currently does not have a tool similar to Solid Edge's Replace face tool. especially "replace face" - what kind of sorcery is this? ;) "Replace face" is a very useful tool that I've used quite a few times. I certainly hope that something similar gets added to FreeCAD in the future. But it m...

Re: FreeCAD renderer is CPU bounded (at least for me)

In the file https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD_sf_master/blob/master/src/Mod/Part/Gui/SoBrepFaceSet.h you could activate the define #define RENDER_GLARRAYS (by replacing #if 0 with #if 1) and check if this makes higher use of the GPU. No bigger difference for "Panels". Unfortunately both GPU usage ...

Re: Series of articles about the pitfalls of parametric edit

Hi arcol! It's hard to replicate the video without "Body" container. Unfortunately the "Body" is not implemented in the master FreeCAD so far, only in the "assembly" branch. In your file cylinders and rest of model aren't connected with each other. You do boolean fusion and them add a pad on cylinde...

FreeCAD renderer is CPU bounded (at least for me)

I don't want hi-jack that thread , but only share a small observation. http://en.zimagez.com/miniature/fcusage.png I opened Yorik's the "panel" file , disabled Shape2DView projections and made the view turntable. Then observed CPU (via top) and GPU ( via radeontop - a Linux tool, works with Radeons ...

Re: Mirror bottom in Z-

That's display gravy. Evidently it's cool to look at, but it must be CPU/GPU intensive, would it? Would it be possible to not compute when the user translates or rotates the view? Then it would not impact display performance too much. Is it useless? Quite! :D But pro CAD software already do it: NX ...
