If any action causes the software to act as if it has crashed, I would choose a solution where the software informes the user of what is happening.

Edit Crashes for me aswell EDIT- When sweeping along the full, 360° ellipse no problem. The crash happens when sweeping along the ellipse arc from -5° to 185°.
