Once you have the sketch inside the Body, you may use the external geometry tool

It's also possible to use an edge within the sketch, just make the sketch visible and use select reference option in the revolution dialogue.

I agree, I was toying with the bind mode, and am intrigued by the fact that the SSB can be detached from the source object and then used as a datum object.
