Re: dot in filename issue with new backup policy

What if we include the information of the archive between parenthesis as the browsers do with (n) when downloading, to avoid deleting a previous download?
The parenthesis would then be forbidden in the format the user can define.

Re: dot in filename issue with new backup policy

As I told you the problem is to have a way to clearly identify what archive relates to what project, knowing that the format of the date can be changed at any moment by the user. how to make the difference of the archives of the 2 following projects: project.FCStd project-1.FCStd project-20200301.FC...

Re: dot in filename issue with new backup policy

Hello Double extension causes problems when the second extension is program extension ie (.exe, .bat, .cmd, .msi, .dll and some others). Therefore, I do not agree that this multiple extension represents a risk. I just searched on my PC (with grepwin that is a more reliable tool that windows search) ...

Re: dot in filename issue with new backup policy

Yes I agree and that is why I modify the configuration of any PC to show all extensions.
But our files are not a malware right.
No anti-virus will discard such a file. right?
As long as FCBak file extension is unknown windows display both extensions. Right?

So where is the problem?

Re: dot in filename issue with new backup policy

Are we really certain the 2 dots in the name cause problem. I never had such problems and I have been using many protection softwarein my life. Re: dot in filename issue with new backup policy

Your way would mix the files of the different projects saved in the same folder. That is why the name followed by the date is a better way sorting. The backup policy is base on the date of the file so that whatever the logic of the naming of the backup they can be properly ordered to delete the elde...

Re: dot in filename issue with new backup policy

New proposal
And what if we put the - between the date and the FCBak extension.
Eventially swap both FCBak-<the date>

Like that the part of the name before the . is alway what is to be compared in Backup policy.

Re: dot in filename issue with new backup policy

OK I continue the analysis this week-end. To keep the number of archives we list the documents starting with the same name. I have to think a way to avoid confusions of the archives in this case. I often add a -1 -2 to a project name when I want to keep a version.

I take that this week-end.

Re: dot in filename issue with new backup policy

In fact what we can do is simply remove the . between the name and the date.
If somebody wants a - it can put it in the format what could be the default.

Tell me what you prefer either force a - instead of a . or move the separator in the format.
