Yeah, fascinating model.
A sea trial would be great.

Re: fcVM workbench

... However, I still don't know the history of how these two competing definitions came about. Take a pragmatic approach: Your definition of plasticity is correct. Point. To investigate the history of the formulae is a rabbit-hole. For me it is interesting that (local) stress peaks can be eliminate...

Re: fcVM workbench

... Having said that, using such a high value in a practical structural analysis (geometric linear without extreme mesh refinement and uncertainty about local detailing - see Thomas’ weld profiles) would (in my view) be grossly non-conservative. I would therefore stick with deriving alpha from the ...

Re: fcVM workbench

I do not really understand the triaxiality concept. When doing a hand calculation (with stress/strain tensors at yellow "X") I get a very low triaxiality, as to expect, nearly pure shear. PEEQ is 5%, analog to IdeaStatica the plastic limit is reached. In the end I get a epsilon_cr of 32%. ...

Re: fcVM workbench

Just updated the fcVM-wb, nice! @HarryvL : For me the point is, that I can run a linear analysis. If the stresses exceeding the limit fy, start fcVM and do the nonlinear analysis. Which btw runs much faster than ccx with nonlinear options. My loads allready contain the safety-factors from the static...

Re: fcVM workbench

Just updated the fcVM-wb. I found this interesting article about the triaxiality concept: https://publications.vtt.fi/julkaisut/muut/2016/VTT-R-04741-16.pdf What gives me a headache is the wide range of alpha-values in table 4, used for EQ.4. Since the loading in my FEM-model contains allready the s...

Re: fcVM workbench

fcVM compared to ideastatica. ideastatica uses a bilinear material model: https://www.ideastatica.com/de/support-center/materialmodell Cut of criterion for max plastic strain is 5% (default). HEA-200 frame under 25 kNm momentum loading, steel S235: As you can see from the curves, both calculations g...

Re: fcVM workbench

At the beginning of the year, the 4 m mast fell from the platform and hit a building below the platform. Our company was at the site years ago. The original construction was over 15 years ago, carried out by another company. My task was to show that even under the new wind loads a fall is unlikely. ...

Re: fcVM workbench

Here is another one: Anchor plate of a small antenna mast. The mast is boltet on a platform of a huge concrete tower, location Föhr island, north sea. I like the plotting of the "capacity-curves", you can see immediatly the huge difference between linear elastic/plastic calculation. Design...

Re: fcVM workbench

Works here too: ... Looks like the stiffening is very effective. Behaves like fully clamped tube. Did you try mesh refinement to check the results converge? No. For a project like this (doing the statics for a new cellphone base station) I have 12 hours. This includes all discussions with the custo...
