Manuals of Style are generally not very comprehensive. They normally reflect what a particular group is looking for when deciding to accept a work for publication. Most omit specifics of grammar and punctuation except where required for their particular needs (e.g. citations, tables, indices, etc.)....

If the center is at the intersection of the two diagonals, you can use the outer holes as external references for construction geometry to find the center geometrically. Way to go Chris!
