Re: My take on the FreeCAD GUI

we have a "very good looking program but works like crap" GUI isn't about looks but workflow. ;) We could measure things like: - time for first simple model to be done by a new FreeCAD user with/ without prior experience in other 3D CAD software - time to adapt FreeCAD to the individual w...

Re: My take on the FreeCAD GUI

Most mentioned , yes! But I am convinced from my experience teaching many people how to model with FreeCAD, that the GUI is not at all the problem. It is rather that 3D modeling is inherently difficult. Yes. Because the 3D modeling part is difficult, we should assist newcomers in learning as much a...

Re: My take on the FreeCAD GUI

My conclusion is, you have to do more than simply redesign the Application. There is a need to redesign some features. That's what we are doing here. Its not about making the GUI pretty. That way, what ever you select with the mouse filters a context bar and shows only possible features. That would...

Re: My take on the FreeCAD GUI

If you wish to reduce complexity, then try to merge Icons that do similar things. Your are right. We could combine additive and subtractive features in the Part Design workbench, resulting in a lot less icons. Alternatively we can combine Pad, Loft and Pipe. Pad is just a special case of a Pipe wit...

Re: My take on the FreeCAD GUI

I do think we could learn more from other cad programs UI so we can get more pro's on board because if they recognize icons and workflows they will adapt much faster. I would say we can go even further. Not only copy what other 3D CAD software do well, but also come up with completely new concepts....

Re: My take on the FreeCAD GUI

Let's not have the same conversation over and over, asking if a new GUI is needed at all. This does not make any sense. Just accept that I want to see whats possible in 3D CAD GUIs and this is an experiment. The users will decide on their own what they want. Revolutionary ideas on 3D CAD software GU...

Re: My take on the FreeCAD GUI

user1234 I personally also like the GUI how it is, with some exceptions, BUT its a fact that its not beginner friendly. The GUI is probably the most mentioned reason why beginners get frustrated with FreeCAD. If we ever implemented whatever we discuss in this thread, the classic GUI still would be ...

I'm a bit triggered by the login icon.
The Login icon is there for Git integration to be able to seamlessly colaborate with others on bigger assemblies.

Re: My take on the FreeCAD GUI

@obelisk79 is correct. Thank you for clarifying it to others. This is a wireframe mockup. These black and white wireframe nockups are used to show concepts of UI designs.
