Microelly2 projects conversion - license question

Postby marja1 » Wed Apr 07, 2021 5:04 pm

Hi,
I started to look at Microlly2 's work.(I asked if it was good to do the job in the forum yesterday, no one answered) An attempt to convert them to be compatible with new FreeCAD and might add them to Design456.
I noticed that he has this kind license

Code: Select all

#-------------------------------------------------
#-- feedbacksketch shape models
#--
#-- microelly 2017 v 0.3
#--
#-- GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL)
#-------------------------------------------------
which is not exactly what freecad has at the moment. I know almost nothing about licenses .. so I don't know if this license is equal to version 2 which I have and as I heard from one member FreeCAD also has.
Please let me know, if they are not .. I will not work on the files .. as it will be waste of time.

I let this question here today, if there is no response . .I will deleted .. and I will stop the attempt. It means that Freecad community is not interested in the work.

I can't help you with the license part. But don't stop developing please. As a user I can see how your workbench is very usefull. But since I'm not a developer I don't comment to your developing related quastions. I think there are more users like me. I gues when your workbench is more usable your will get more responce from developers as well as users. Give it some time.

Work away. He uses licence without number, so I'd assume the newest version. The original LGPL (v2) is from 1991....the 2.1 is from 1999 and v3 is from 2007. FreeCAD uses LGPL2+ The + means "or any newer version".

The above is my take on it and it's not the official statement from the project core developers :D

The license text in section 13. states:
LGPL wrote: Each version is given a distinguishing version number. If the Library
specifies a version number of this License which applies to it and
"any later version", you have the option of following the terms and
conditions either of that version or of any later version published by
the Free Software Foundation. If the Library does not specify a
license version number, you may choose any version ever published by
the Free Software Foundation.
So, you can choose between LGPL 2.0, 2.1 or 3.0 (with the option of "any later version").

Ok thank you.
I will go ahead with this conversion.
I will put the same as you all use .. which was recommended to me also.
Thanks again.
