File was not written with this version of the topology

Post by spanner888 »

At lunchtime today, I created simple design & path, see attached.

This evening opening file in same version (& same session) of FreeCAD gives this message:

Code: Select all

17:34:26 File was not written with this version of the topology
17:34:26 File was not written with this version of the topology
Also occurs after restarting FC & opening just created file.

Now I have been ignoring this for older designs, but same FC version?

Seems like small issue, but it does weaken my trust in these messages, and might lead to future issues.

Code: Select all

OS: Windows 10 Version 2009

EDIT: I forget to search for similar issues. There are a lot of reports, for this year, but they all seem to cover different situations.

No problem here with your file. Try to restart FreeCAD, reset your config files, or try 0.20.

I see the same thing fairly often. I do not know why, and it does not seem to cause any problems. Still a bit disconcerting.

I should add that I did not see the problem when I opened the posted file.

Thanks for replies.

Playing around with a clean user profile, shows the need to enable Log messages, to see the message.

The message is printed inside this and this function.

It's hard to say what is causing a stream to become invalid when reading the BRep file. Since all others here can read the file without problems the file is probably not corrupted.

Do you get this message every time you load the project or only randomly?

When opening the file in a Zip program you can see that the files PartShape5.brp and PartShape6.brp are empty and they probably cause the message to appear.

Now the next question is how it can happen to create an empty file. Even when writing a null shape to a Brep file it won't be empty.

The error occurs every time I open the file. I suspect other users who do not see the message have not enabled log messages.

I made a copy of the file and started to simplify the content, just deleted the entire Path job, saved and re-opened and message has gone.

Also gone are the two empty files, and many other (not empty) files that are in earlier version. I will keep dabbling over next day or so to see if can find anything to narrow down what triggers this.

Thanks for your help, and everything else you do for FreeCAD !

Seems like each profile operation is generating this message, as deleting one by one, save, re-open file and messages go from two to one to none.

I have added a helix op to the holes and do not get the message, so next to look into Profile Op, although I am hoping someone Path with experience looks at this as well.

I have enabled log messages in preferences and see the message as well. Furthermore I see the following on hovering over the object:
