How to create a pocket cut?

I have created a drawing with a pocket for a number 2, attached. I am trying to create a job to just cut that pocket and cannot get it to work. I have tried various things, If I select the pocket and create a path pocket operation it cuts the overall outline, For the operation in the file I have selected all of the individual faces in the pocket, but it does nothing. How do I do this?

Re: How to create a pocket cut?
It works if I add an additional Pad at the bottom, where I can selecct the face. So I guess that there is somewhere a super tiny face in between that is missing.

Re: How to create a pocket cut?
Doing a Pocket is currently only possible with a bottom face, as chrisb already pointed out. You can however do a Profile op by selecting an Edge of the "2" and the invoke the "Loop Selection" tool (
) and then create a "Profile Edges" Operation.- dubstar-04

The new adaptive tool will work for that!!
Its currently in development but it would be perfect for clearing the shape prior to profiling.
The forum won't let me upload the FreeCAD file because its too large. You can download it from here:

Thanks to you all for your replies, Profile Op currently looks favourite.
Dubstar, I just downloaded and tried your Adaptive tool file, ran the simulation but it fairly quickly used all 16GB of memory and then all 18GB of swap and locked up my machine. Is it expected to be that memory hungry?

I haven't had any luck with the built in simulation, locks my machine up everytime. I use https://camotics.org for simulation. It generates stock and allows you to walk through the gcode slowly or just jump to the end.micksulley wrote: ↑Mon Aug 27, 2018 9:27 pm Thanks to you all for your replies, Profile Op currently looks favourite.

I like the "Inspect GCode" tool very much. It shows the GCode and when you mark a line it shows the correspoding line in orange. I like this close connection to the gcode.dubstar-04 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 28, 2018 4:54 am It generates stock and allows you to walk through the gcode slowly or just jump to the end.
I widen the window (I would appreciate it verrryy much if it would keep its size) and start selecting with Shift+LineDown to select step by step the GCode lines watching the path becoming orange. That's very close to the simulation.

Re: How to create a pocket cut?
Inspect G-Code does not work for me. This is what I get
Any idea what could cause that?

The yellow points are probably feed rates.
I have no problem here. I guess it is a font problem. Do you have any messages in report view or in the terminal? Can you copy the contents into an editor and see there the text?

Re: How to create a pocket cut?
If I copy paste to an editor it displays g-code as expected. I have just installed 0.17 from the repository to see if it was an AppImage problem but it's just the same in 0.17. I tried running both from a terminal, no errors reported. I tried Report View and that displays little coloured squares just like Inspect G-Code.
I agree it looks like a font problem or missing library but I have no idea where to start to diagnose.
I had noticed it before, but didn't think it was a useful feature until you explained how useful it can be, now I would really like to try it
