A little problem with a cone

Post by quick61 »

Getting back into FreeCAD and checking things out I did a simple model with a cone shape to test the Path 3D pocket, along with the Adaptive Clearing and Profiling. Adaptive sees only the major diameter and seems to ignore the face of the cone. OK, from lurking and reading the last few days, not unexpected.

So I tried 3D pocket and got what looked to be better results, that was until I ran the sim, then going back and hiding the model, I discovered what was happening. Seems when the path gets to the bottom of the cone, while following the taper all the way down, it then runs the tool all the way across the diameter.

Now, it this was run on a router or mill, one can quickly see what would happen the moment the last stepdown had completed.

Here is the model I used -

Now, If I have done something wrong, or this is a known problem with a work around, please let me know.

Hey @quick61 welcome back. (I arrived in to the community after you left).
Quick question, is there a specific reason you're opting to use py2 instead of py3 ?

"opting"? No, just the Daily PPA installed on my system. Do I have a choice? Like I said, it's been a while and I am out of the loop on all the fine tuning of FreeCAD.

I haven't done any experiments in real 3D yet (have enough problems with 2.5D)

Of all the attempts and test cases for 3d milling with Path I love this one the most. It is so simple I would've thought 3D Surface would be able to create a good Path for sure.

Yea, so did I, and it starts out OK and then completely goes off the rails at the end. I see some work is being done at this time on 3D Surface here in this link - https://forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic. ... 10#p296473 - and I'm going to give it a try tomorrow when I need a break from my other project.

I have similar problem with 3d pocket.
I need to mill a part that has an angled side.

You can see on the right, the last pass will go under the part....
