Here's the place for discussion related to CAM/CNC and the development of the Path module.

Free Sinumerik 840D simulator for Path/PP development!

Post by JanneK »

The main reason to post this is to bring awareness to anyone who is interested in contributing to the Path workbench regardless of if they have a CNC to test on at home or not.

Siemens offers an application called SinuTrain that consists of the actual kernel of their controller, and the free version happens to have a functional Mill and a Lathe to which you can send and receive gcode to.

As I bought an old mill with 840D, I made the following test in FreeCAD:

And executed my modified LinuxCNC-PP on it:

The first obstacle/question that came up is that of radius compensation, which seems to be an active thread (https://forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=68467), so maybe a simulator like this might in general help browsing/working with a professional machine and get the handling of things like radius compensation, tools (and sets of tools) aligned in such a way that FreeCAD will be compatible with machines that provide such features.

This is probably a discussion on the philosophy of Path and what the goal of it is in the end. To support / be compatible with "professional machines", or shy away from it and perhaps make it easier for the hobbyist?

The current latest version of SinuTrain can be found here:

I would like to add that all of the standard cycles included within are not encrypted. While it may not be as open as LinuxCNC, it seems to be more open than most of the industry leading controls.
