FEM problem

Post by RobWalker »

Hi Just installed Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and having a problem with FEM in Freecad. The following works on my Windows computer.
1. Open freecad name file and save. Load an .stp file
2 Save again
3 Go to FEM and weight sign appears
4 After a few second Freecad disappears
The same thing happens if I load a sample FEA file.
Any ideas?

Rob - my gut feeling this is more to do with Ubuntu than FreeCAD or the FEM workbench. Nevertheless, it is advisable to post the details of the FreeCAD version you are running.

Click on the help menu, click on “about FreeCAD”. This will copy the info required and you can paste it into a new post.

Plan B - You could also try downloading the latest appimage and running your file on that.
https://www.freecadweb.org/downloads.php

Plan C - give Ubuntu the flick and install MX Linux and install FreeCAD version 19 from the MX installer package manager test repo. ;)

Rob, it's not enough.
in the red ribbon on top of the forum, you got indications how to get and post your freecad information which I copy here:

Please provide your FreeCAD version info - (scroll further down this page if you wish to see a video on how to do this created by Mario52)
Open the Help --> About FreeCAD menu then click on the "Copy to clipboard" button, and paste its content in the text input area. This will provide us valuable information on your exact version and revision number, your operating system as well as FreeCAD's internal libraries. (Mac users: the About FreeCAD menu is under the FreeCAD menu.)

Rob - I am no expert but I think your problem may be related to Qt version 12 on Ubuntu Core.

https://forum.snapcraft.io/t/qt-5-12-on ... ions/22260

As there have been no other suggestions why not make a live USB of a different version of Ubuntu (or another OS) - install FreeCAD and try to run the problem STL file. If it opens you have narrowed down your problem.

Are you sure it is a FEM problem?

Does your problem only happens if you switch to FEM and open a FEM analysis file.

If it would happen on other files and other workbenches as well, it would mean it is not related to FEM and you need to look somewhere else to solve the problem.

Good evening

Thanks for the suggestion to try another OS. I will give that a try but probably not for a few days.
Freecad crashes when trying to load the demonstration files provided with Freecad and the .stp file loads OK into Part Design so it is not the .stp file causing the problem.

Thanks

Sorry, but for me it is not explicit. A general example file or the FEM example files.
