I have a multi material model. Is it possible to display stresses as a percentage of the allowable stress (tension and compression) of the underlying material ? How about strain ?

no, not out of the box, but you could use the formulas in FreeCAD result object to archive this.

What I normally use is VTK result object and only display the stresses higher than a certain value. All other areas with less stress are transparent.

Many CAD-embedded FEA modules allow users to create safety factor plots. Those are obtained by simply dividing the allowable stress (i.e. yield strength or ultimate tensile strength) by von Mises stress. That might be what you are looking for. Unfortunately, it’s not available as a built-in type of contour plot in FreeCAD and you would have to create it manually. I don’t know if this can be done without leaving FreeCAD but export to ParaView would definitely work (Calculator filter can do it).
