Re: Linked files and IFC export
This statement is correct! I agree and understand this issue as this happens in PDF delivery too!
But it's one thing to deliver the project to the client, another to exchange files with colleagues during the elaboration phases of their corresponding projects. And even in these phases, the originals delivered IFC files remain unchanged, as what can be edited are their conversions to the formats of the target CAD programs.
So, similar to PDF format, I believe the discussion would not be about the file format itself, but whether CAD programs can work with IFC natively or not.

Re: Linked files and IFC export
many architecture cad programs can do this. But it is more complex than in the original program, it is a bit like editing step files.
Re: Linked files and IFC export
Well, depending on the quality of the IFC you could get a lot more parametrical informations compared to a PDF. As much as being able to recreate seamlessly many building elements in the software you are using.
Think about BlenderBIM that aims to save directly to IFC onBlenderDocumentSave.

follow my experiments on BIM modelling for architecture design
Re: Linked files and IFC export
It always seems difficult to handle both format at the same time - there are a few issues with FC IFC export at the moment and Yorik expressed it may limit the flexibility of modelling in FC itself.
BTW, any more real tests on IFC export with support on Links maybe added for further discussion and debugging

Re: Linked files and IFC export
in my opinion, the geometry export of a simple copy as ifc works very well. the thing with the attributes is very complicated and has to be individually coordinated between the companies involved in the long term. this can be done very well with other free software.
Re: Linked files and IFC export
I don't know much about the IFC schema, so I don't how it handles, say, doors of same types. But, at the moment, Freecad does not export std_links. Instead of manually having to unlink the objects and make them local in the current file, it would be ideal if the IFC exporter could do that in the same manner that the OBJ exporter grabs all links, makes them dumb, and exports them.
In a Revit centric environment, I am trying to use IFC not as a delivery format but as an exchange format with colleagues. Hence I think it's hard to take one view over another as IFC can be used in many different ways the same way that OBJ can be used in many different way and sometimes as deliverables like PDFs.

Re: Linked files and IFC export
Can you describe the problem step by step so developers can have a look to debug / implement new feature?
There were some discussion in Arch/BIM / IFC sub-forum reporting issues about usage of Links in Arch/BIM to expedite its adaptation :-
[ PR Merged- Link in Arch/BIM -- 1 ] Link of Window Not Creating Hole
[ Link in Arch/BIM -- 2 ] Link of Window Not Exported in IFC

Re: Linked files and IFC export
ifc is not used as a data exchange format in a bim process, only as a reference model

step is very well suited as an exchange format
Re: Linked files and IFC export
That's fine. But in practice that's how it gets used And I don't see anything wrong with that. Much better if IFC can be used than a more lossy format.thomas-neemann wrote: ↑Wed Jan 26, 2022 5:14 pm ifc is not used as a data exchange format in a bim process, only as a reference model

Re: Linked files and IFC export
the problem is that ifc cannot be processed well, because e.g. is very slow. what speaks against stp?
