Yes, I think there are two ways towards this problem. The full parametric way, where everything is defined via splines and the freeform-approach. Both ways have there advantages... The way that is more suited for freecad is maybe the parametric way, defining everything via wires. Maybe it's time to try this approach and see what is possible. At least your car-example looks quite promising.
