Caliper project (first serious attempt)

Postby claus1982 » Tue Apr 21, 2020 4:38 pm

Hello, this is my first attempt to achieve a serious job.
I saw this 3 tutorials serie on Inventor and I wanted to reproduce something similar with FC.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyMHLdniZgU&t=3036s
It has been interesting experience, cause I had the occasion to see upsides an downsides of FC.
I would have liked to put some TechDraw view, but it seems today's build does not want.
My issue chart is:
33% I am still learning
33% FC sometimes imposes to me its opinion
33% I am using a dev version, so it is perfectly normal.
Every part was created with little effort partially due to this development version, partially due to my inexperience.
Total time: 3days (but a lot of time I spent to look for documentation, maybe it is 2 days)
Next step would be put some pieces in PATH workbench and see if it is possible to achieve signs on the pieces.
Anyway here some images, suggestions/critiques are welcome.
I hope you enjoy
Cheers
Claudio

Nice!!!
Please rename the title to be a little less generic (perhaps putting 'First serious attempt' in parentheses?)
Add your About to the OP
Perhaps go in to some more detail on your experience: lessons learned, bugs encountered, workarounds, feature you may be pining for...?

...eeh... Every time i try to copy FreeCAD version this is what it
OS: Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS (XFCE/xubuntu)
Word size of OS: 64-bit
Word size of FreeCAD: 64-bit
Version: 0.19. (M-I-S-S-I-N-G V-E-R-S-I-O-N)
Build type: Release
Branch: unknown
Hash: e8e67e8c5ebbc9f9ed9ea67aba5b891969595ece
Python version: 3.6.9
Qt version: 5.9.5
Coin version: 4.0.0a
OCC version: 7.3.0
Locale: Italian/Italy (it_IT)
But copying from apt install I think this is today's build
0.19~pre2~202004201806~ubuntu18.04.1
Perhaps go in to some more detail on your experience: lessons learned, bugs encountered, workarounds, feature you may be pining for...?
OK then, and please don't take this as complaint but as report to improve the software :)
1-I had issues using move tool from Draft workbench.
Even if I move entities according to the right axis system sometimes it seems not working.
2-Today's TechDraw tool did not work with views containing signs, numbers etc (they were imported DXF files made in LibreCAD).
3-I tried to use in draft the 2d projection tool but obviosly views cannot be places properly and dimensions cannot be customized (arrows' type/dimension, texts offset)
Using Techdraw to place 2D views on page could not allow to insert dimensions and wrinting were also too thick and not good appeareance.
4-It would be good to add possibility to let communicate draft with techdraw
5-Sometimes operating with imported DXF took a lot of time, probably due to CPU computing
(I created texts in LibreCAD then exploded all entities then imported in FreeCad, because texts were considered as labels, so it was not possible)
6-In today's version there was no show/hide grid option in draft
7-I had even some problem with array during locking nut creation, it crashed always so i created 12 cylinders and i subtracted to the nut shape to have that shape.
I remember no other Issues: I wish FC becoming better and better, because is seriously promising.
Cheers

I have no idea, it was just on the backside of caliper, I guess is a scale that has something to do with weights lengths and weights. So bad I know nothing a bout mechanics...

Well done!

generally the scale on the back shown in figure is the weight of a bar "square section" and "circular section".

my metric caliper show "kg. per m." Fe and the n on the square scale it say "square" = O x 1.273 meaning that the area of the square profile is calculated multiply the diameter for 1.273.

Hope to have been clear.
