MIT Sean Collier Memorial

Post by thschrader »

The monument was dedicated to MIT police officer Sean Collier,
who was shot on April 18. 2013.

From an engineering point of view this is a fascinating structure, because the architects
used graphic statics for the calculation. Isnt it astonishing that an old method gets a renaissance?
You can do 2D graphic statics with the sketcher-wb:
https://forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic.php?t=46333

But for the monument, they used a 3D method!
I will try to redo this with FC (in my spare private time…)

That's really fascinating. Looking forward to see you model!

I second that!

me too!

You shoul put all this graphical analysis stuff on the wiki! That is sooo cool.

Thanks, but I think in this case there are a “few” hurdles to overcome.
For the graphic statics I need every stone.
Using slice-tool from part-wb? Slice, slice, slice…
Maybe it is better to use the wall as reference and make a new part of each stone.
Starting with 1, then stone 2 using 1 as reference and so on.

I am wondering about the file-size. 8 MB (?).
Because you can generate the complete structure with 3 sketches and an ellipsoid from part-wb.
Not a big thing…

Probably I would use Part Slice too...

Something is wrong with my model.
Export the structure (green) as step-file, reimport ==> ellipsoid remains. File size of step 29 MB (?)
Built a new one from scratch, using slice: tricky too, 5 bodys are generated, should be 6.
I need a new approach.

Fuse the slicing object together before slicing. It is explained mentioned in the example on Part Slice page. Slicing object must pass BOP check, your Extrude001 does not.

I added it to Part_Slice#Notes

That works. I used BooleanFragments on the slicing-plane, hope thats correct.
Can you have a look at my original model from the first post?
Try to subtract (part-wb "cut") the ellipsoid from the (green) walls. The FC-file boost up to 8 MB.
When exporting the resulting structure as step, you get a file size of more than 20 MB.
I used splines in the basic sketch of the walls, maybe thats the reason.
