Freecad and Blender as team

Post by cad1234 »

created this free-of-sense-just-for-fun-fantasy-model ”lake house” last year ;) to learn a bit more about FC tools by doing, but mainly to find out, how to export to Blender and make renderings.
Many high-price commercial Arch software have render engines under theire hood, but I`m convinced, that FC, in combination with other already existing opensource software like Blender, could nearly reach the same level.
All done in Freecad, in Blender only material assignment, adding some trees, a plane as water surface and render.

Further improvement could be done in Blender , by improving / optimizing material and using additional effects like atmosphere effects etc, if needed

PS: Looking back to my “model” from the view of today, many things could be done better, easier and with less failures which are still inside the model.
And yes, the model was created free of any thoughts about statics and physics ;-)

Could you do a simple tutorial on your workflow ?

Better still, share / open-source your model ?

Thanks :D

Looks really neat! The only thing missing is mooring points for the boat. :D

Great effort.

Ohhhh. So nice. I like it. Even it has structural diagonals :) it would be cool to share the FC file.
Sure! We should create a new category: FC4FUN with concept designs and fantasy models.
Here my contribution, a shelter where I tested Arch Texture WB.

Good idea with the new category :)

And good to share your model and better still your workflow in OSArch? :D

Seem lots of people including myself are looking for a more complete solution from design concept to presentation and documentation !

There already exists a great tutorial series about the complete architectural working process
from the first step until visualization as last step made by Yorik.
Look for “BIM with FreeCAD - Barcelona pavillion”
https://www.youtube.com/user/yorikvanhavre

It consists of 17 Videos, a complete tutorial from a professional!
Here is the link to the Barcelona pavillion render video, which describes everything better, then I ever could do:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-ViQil7I1g

Here is the link to the “pabellon de barcellona freecad model, where you also find the ifc-file

https://github.com/yorikvanhavre/barcelona-pavillion

So someone can compare, what Yorik does, and what is on his/her screen ;)

From my point of view, I would add a few points:

1. Export the FC model via ifc and install in Blender the BlenderBIM Addon.
Click “Force export as Bref” in the FC IFC preference panel
The import works fine. For any FC Windows or CW Object, 2 materials are generated in the material slot, one for the frame and one for the glass panel.
So you can change both with a few clicks. No need, to go into the edit mode or clicking faces.

2.) For the facade glass panel, I would not recommend the internal glass shader.
There are better ready to use Blender facade glass material in the Inet, which produces a more realistic relation between transparency and reflection.
You can import external material by using the “append” function.

3) Recommend to install the “Sun position” Addon in Blender
It gives you the opportunity, to set the exact location of your building.
With date and time input, you can see the effect of light and shadows, depending on your setting.
You can place several cameras in the building and can look through these cameras in the room, helpful if you have rooms with very small windows.

4.) EVEE is a fantastic realtime render, but it is not physical correct.
It has also Problems, if you have a glass behind glass situation, shadows not correct.
I use it during the design process, but make the final render with cycles

BTW: Of course, no problem with uploading my FC-File, but in this case, I would not force it. As I mention, it was an early stage of learning, I didn`t use most of the great tools, FC has.
Think about of someone, who has the first contact to FC and would download this as an example. It would lead him/her in a complete wrong direction with a complete wrong impression, what can be done with FC, at the end frustration.
Think, the great FC project deserves better than this...(bad examples, which do not show the powerfull tools, FC has) ...

You are too strict with yourself. There is only one guy with good Architectural knowledge of FreeCAD at the moment, Yorik. The rest of us are at the same low level, doing what we can to help to each other. Look at this https://wiki.osarch.org/index.php?title ... in_FreeCAD You will see examples with workflows that maybe are not the best. That is our exploration. There is not adventure if there is not some risk. :)

Tried to upload the Blender File with material and setting, but file to big.
Created a Dropbox account, so everyone who is interested, could download it.
Here is the link:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/xudblh4y3rc0h ... se.7z?dl=0

No need to register, just close the register box and then download.
Could someone confirm, whether the download works? Hopefully not only on my PC :D

Blender 292.
There are 2 scenery: one for the day (Tag) and one for the night (Nacht), with some colored lamps in the building.
The glass facade material and the water surface material (which is a special one ;-)) should be included.
Instead of HDR Lighting, what Yorik does, I used the Skytexture as Background.
The correct name for the additional Addon is: Lighting sun position.
It takes a few seconds, before everything could be seen in the Blender viewport.

Forgot something: Unfortunately, I was never been able, to get Yoriks Blender Freecadimporter running..maybe my fault, so I used ifc instead.
