various models

Post by casper-nilsson »

I'm a new FreeCAD user, here is the first models I made.

First FreeCAD model I made, a rope block part.

A mesh pot.

Aeroponics stuff

Accessory rail, made it today. :)

Funny how you always find a better way to do the models after you done them...

Hi, the three first are really nice models, great. The last one I wouldn't even post it here. We (as mankind) have nothing to gain from this kind of gun fetishism.

The mesh pot looks very interesting. Is it fully script-based?

kwahooo: No scripting, I'm still a newbie

logari81: Since I do not want to be called a weapons fetish so I feel I must defend myself a bit. I'm not trying to make a gun or anything, even if its a common part on weapon design, however its a nice rail that people should use more in common design, exemple; http://www.woodencamera.com/safety-nato-rail
Weapons hugger or not, design is everywhere, guns are a big part of engineering skills, there is much to be inspired by, even if you do not like guns.
I understand your point, but same argument can be used on alot of things, you can't say no to automobile design, even if car engines slowly kills the planet too.

Anyway, thx for the critic.

if it is not supposed to be part of a machine designed for killing, then I agree it is a very nice part. I feel quite relieved that your intention wasn't to model the whole gun.

if you'd like you could also upload the fcstd files to show people how you created the models.

Hmm the files are huge, mesh pot file is 172Mb for exemple, but it was simple to make them, for the mesh pot I started with two cone solids, for the holes I made a square profile fillet it, dublicated, rotated and used it to punch the holes.
Alot of repeating work, but the more I repeat things the faster it will be in the muscle memory 8-)

Almost the same thing for the rest of the stuff, boolean tools. The rail was my first model where I started from a 2D made profile, after that I went on with the Cut tool and basic solids.

I'm not doing things the fastest way, but I'm learning fast I think.

If all objects are fully parametric then it is sufficient to post only the Document.xml and GuiDocument.xml files. Both are inside the fcstd files (which are simple .zip files).

Hi casper-nilsson,

Impressive work!!! :)

I like your 3-color gradient background.

In the upcoming release, hopefully there will be pattern features in Part Design that will make things faster. In the meantime, it can be done with Macros.

https://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/ ... tle=Macros

Oh well, the existing array macro is for a rectangular pattern, but if you asked, I'm sure some people could help you make a circular pattern... (not me as I still have not figured out Python)

P.S. Can we use your aeroponics screenshot in the wiki? I'd like to put it in the Screenshots page. :)

Sure its ok to use them, but reupload it to sourceforge, since its a dropbox link, you never know how long it will be in my folder.
I uploaded two of the pics to wikipedia http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:FreeCAD and also Yoriks FreeCAD logo.
I will try to make a nice article on Swedish there one day, already started but not uploaded it.

The aeroponics stuff is still wip, and now when I figured out how to make some shapes the right way I will keep workin on the last pipe parts. Stay tuned for a better pic.

The color gradient is:
top #97C9CD Blue
middle #FFFFA6 yellow
bottom #7D8685 grey
Looks better then the default Catia like style ;)
To match the material with the background simply add a bit of blue to the ambient color and a bit yellow to the specular, like the railmaterial, looks nice for a screenshot. There is also a bit of anti aliasing in some of the screenshots, its done by overriding settings in the graphics card settings.

casper-nilsson, can please upload the Document.xml and GuiDocument.xml files inside your .fcstd project files? If all the objects in your modelling history are fully parametric then we don't need the data files, i.e. the .brep files inside the .fcstd archive.
